Russia ambassador to Mauritius states fair trade is critical for Africa

(MENAFN)
Fair trade is crucial to Africa’s development and long-term independence, according to Irada Zeynalova, Russia’s ambassador to Mauritius. In a recent interview with the local publication Bizweek, Zeynalova emphasized the importance of empowering African countries to build self-sufficient economies rather than relying on foreign assistance.

She argued that African nations should be free to determine their own development paths, moving away from economic structures imposed during the colonial era. “Fair trade is critical,” she said, stressing that the continent must break away from the lingering influence of colonialism, which stripped it of both human resources and natural wealth. Zeynalova added that Africa’s current generation deserves a chance at a sovereign and improved future. “The time of colonialism must end,” she declared.

The ambassador pointed out that poverty in Africa extends beyond income, rooted in systemic issues such as lack of access to healthcare, education, and clean water. Recalling her personal connection to Sudan—where her son worked before conflict erupted—Zeynalova highlighted how sanctions devastated the country’s agricultural sector despite its natural advantages, such as access to the Nile River. “People there survive on $2 a week,” she noted.

She emphasized that many in Sudan and across the continent are not asking for handouts but for safety, education, and healthcare so they can develop their own nations. “Leave us alone. Give us safety, medicine, education. We can develop our country ourselves,” she quoted locals as saying.

Zeynalova also highlighted the significance of BRICS in supporting the Global South. Unlike Western organizations like NATO or the EU, BRICS offers a cooperative platform where nations are treated equally and without restrictive conditions. She described BRICS—which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—as a group built on inclusiveness and mutual respect.

Regarding Russia’s relationship with Mauritius, Zeynalova reaffirmed her country’s respect for the island nation’s sovereignty. She recalled that Russia was among the first to recognize Mauritius’ independence, stating, “In Russia, we remember everything.” She reiterated Russia’s commitment to supporting the country’s independence and development.
